Personal Account
"My grandfather is one of the names listed - Douglas Wardleworth. He was, at the time he volunteered to serve in the Royal Army Medical Corps, a doctor in Sheringham, and lived in the house just off the roundabout called I think St Nicholas. I must have walked past the memorial hundreds of times without realising his name was on it!
He drowned under mysterious circumstances in Le Havre on October 24th 1914. On the same day he died his son, Edmund Douglas, was born in St Nicholas. It is a family story that when they came to tell his widow that he had been killed she said she knew as he had already been to see her and his son to say goodbye.
Douglas Wardleworth's widow (my grandmother) was Mary Piggot, daughter of Edmund Piggot and Emma Upcher of Sheringham Hall.
Edmund Douglas was my father. He died in November 1999, having lived in Cley-next-the-Sea from about 1959 until his death."
