Personal Account

Flight Sub-Lieutenant Mervyn Henry Wollaston TRENDELL (RAF) was the youngest son of the Reverend G J W and Mrs Trendell of The Vicarage, Vicarage Road, Sheringham.

 

At 1643 hours on 18th May 1918 he took off from his ship, HMS Galatea, in Sopwith Camel 2F.1, Serial Number: N6766.

The aeroplane clipped a tree and crashed on its final approach into Royal Naval Air Station Donibristle, Fife.

Seriously injured, he was transported across the Firth of Forth to the Royal Naval Hospital at South Queensferry but succumbed to his injuries the following day, Whit Sunday, aged 18 years.

His body was interred in his father’s churchyard (All Saints) at Upper Sheringham.
